INJURY-ravaged Stockport County suffered an emphatic first league defeat of the season at home to Scunthorpe.

Last week boss Jim Gannon lost Matty McNeil and Johnny Mullins for a month, and they were joined on the treatment table on Friday by key player Tommy Rowe and Dom Blizzard, who both suffered hamstring injuries in training.

Anthony Pilkington headed over Jim McNulty's cross from close range early on but most of the action was at the other end.

County escaped when Paul Hayes found himself with just the keeper to beat - even though he looked offside - but Owain Fon Williams stuck out a foot at the right time to deny him.

But Gary Hooper made no mistake on the half hour when he kept his balance under pressure to slot the ball past Williams.

The second half was less than a minute old when Grant McCann's free-kick was played on to Hooper who struck the ball high into the net from a couple of yards out.

In the 58th minute McCann hit a powerful free-kick from just outside the County box and a slight deflection took it beyond the reach of Williams.

There was no way back for County but Pilkington had an effort cleared off the line in the third minute of injury time.
